Frequently Asked Questions
‘Vajra Fire: The Tantric Wisdom of Drukpa Kunley’
A Vajra Path Pilgrimage in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan
1. What is the focus of this Vajra Path Journey?
This immersive journey in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan will deepen participants’
connection with the View, Meditation, Action of Vajrayāna, or Tantric Buddhism, at
places where Vajrayāna Buddhism has flourished for more than twelve hundred years.
The trip is designed to deepen personal transformation through teachings, transmissions, and lineage-based, yogic practices that provide direct experience of the realization of Vajrayāna Buddhism’s founders, the Tantric Mahāsiddhās, as exemplified in the provocative life and teachings of the 15th century Tibetan master, Drukpa Kunley, as well as Guru Padmasambhava and Yeshé Tsogyal, who also practiced and taught extensively in the mountains and forests of what is now Bhutan.
2. Who is this trip designed for?
The trip is offered to anyone with an open mind and open heart who wishes to deepen
their spiritual journey, whether you are an experienced practitioner or completely new to meditation and Buddhist Tantra. The pilgrimage will provide profound insight into the original ethos and nondual orientation of Vajrayāna Buddhism and the joy, wild wisdom, and deep equanimity that arise from direct spiritual realization.
3. What kind of practices will be presented?
The trip will include teachings and transmissions of the core Vajrayāna practices of
Tummo (‘Inner Fire’) and Karmamudrā (‘Bliss and Emptiness’) that lead to Mahāmudrā, the Tantric realization of Nonduality. Foundational yoga, meditation, and breathing practices in the context of the Six Yogas of Naropā and Niguma will be
enhanced by supplementary instructions in the effective use of mantras, yantras, and
Tantric ritual. The journey will include practice at revered pilgrimage sites, group
discussions, and time for individual pursuits and self-reflection.
4. Do I need prior experience in meditation or Buddhist practice to join this trip?
Beginners are very welcome on this journey. The teachings and practices will be
accessible and enriching to individuals at every level, while additional guidance will be
provided for those who are new to the view and practice of Vajrayāna Buddhism.
5. What should I bring with me on the trip?
Comfortable, modest clothing suitable for yoga, meditation, and temple visits; warmer clothing, walking shoes, and a light waterproof jacket for cool nights and day hikes; a notebook and pens for journaling; a water bottle; a lightweight meditation cushion (optional); prescribed medications; optional health supplements and snacks (nuts, power bars, etc.); diverse travel essentials; and a respectful and open state of mind.
6. Will food and accommodation be provided?
Accommodations will be provided throughout the trip in well-appointed hotels and
guesthouses with double, twin, or single rooms, as per your personal preference.
Healthful meals, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, will be provided
throughout the journey, aligned with Vajra Path principles of mindful living.
7. What will the daily schedule be like?
A typical day will begin with meditation and yoga practice, followed by breakfast. Later morning teachings, discussions, and practice will be conducted, wherever possible, at sacred sites connected with the life and legacy of Drukpa Kunley, Padmasamhava, Yeshé Tsogyal, and other Tantric adepts. Afternoons may include pilgrimage hikes, yogic practices, and related activities including writing and art production. Evenings will include group discussions and Q&A with teachers.
8. Is there a code of conduct for this trip?
Participants are expected to follow ethical guidelines of non-harming, honesty, and
mindfulness, and to respect the teachers, fellow participants, and environment of
Bhutan, especially its sacred places. Participants should avoid any form of disruptive
behavior that compromises the integrity of the journey and the group experience.
9. Will I be able to use my iPhone or laptop during the trip?
Although it is recommended to limit iPhone and internet use to fully immerse yourself in the experience of this pilgrimage and retreat, WiFi will be available at all of our hotels and guesthouses and trip updates will be sent regularly via email and
WhatsApp. Be sure to bring a power adaptor. Bhutan uses type C (two round pins) and type D (three round pins in a triangular pattern) plug types and operates on a 230V supply voltage.
10. How can I prepare physically, emotionally, and mentally for the trip?
It is advised to set personal intentions for your journey, perhaps by beginning a trip
journal. Cultivate an open heart and mind in accord with the View, Meditation, and
Action of Buddhist practice (Group emails and pre-trip Zoom meetings will cover these and other related subjects). When applicable, increase your physical fitness for the trip through exercises such as Vajra Squats (instructions will be provided in advance to all trip participants). Read about the teachings and practices with which you will be engaging. Initial recommendations include Dr. Nida’s Karmamudrā: The Yoga of Bliss, Ian Baker’s Tibetan Yoga: Principles & Practices, and Elizabeth Monson’s Tales of a Mad Yogi: The Life and Wild Wisdom of Drukpa Kunley.
11. Are flights into and out of Bhutan included in the trip cost?
You are responsible for your own intercontinental flights to either Kathmandu, Delhi,
or Bangkok, as well as your connecting flights to and from Paro, Bhutan. You may book your own flights to and from Paro, Bhutan, from any of the above-mentioned cities on either Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines, with arrival in Bhutan on November 16th and departure on November 30th. The current flightcost for roundtrip airfare to Paro from Kathmandu is $450. The cost from Delhi is $600 and from Bangkok the cost is $920.
